As an installation artist, the gallery becomes Joel Armstrong's canvas. While studying for his Masters of Fine Art, Joel questioned the idea of drawing. Instead of the traditional materials Joel chose baling wire because it most naturally defined the artist having grown up Corpus Christi, Texas. The sturdiness of the metal combined with the soft, subtle curves makes wire a great drawing instrument.
Joel creates wire drawings of everyday items, which he finishes with a rust patina that intentionally references childhood memories living on the gulf coast of Texas.
Time and space are integral to Joels compositions. He collects wire drawings in to gatherings that either attach to the walls or suspend from the ceiling. He adds sound, light and sometimes odours to create a multisensory environment. His aim; to make people feel at home and offer them an opportunity to be a part of something spiritual.
